There is a widely held belief that mathematics is orderly. That numbers, when left to their own devices, proceed in neat columns toward inevitable conclusions. This belief, while comforting, is almost entirely wrong.
Bistromath Works was founded on a different observation: that the most interesting computations occur in environments that have no business producing them. That a problem approached with rigidity yields rigid answers, while a problem approached over a good meal and a glass of something worth drinking yields answers that are not only correct but occasionally inspired.
We build computational tools for people who understand that precision and personality are not mutually exclusive. Our clients tend to be the sort of people who want their data handled with the same care a great kitchen applies to a reduction: nothing wasted, nothing rushed, everything in service of the final result.
We believe that computation should be powerful without being tedious, accurate without being humorless, and sophisticated without requiring you to pretend you enjoy spreadsheets. You may end up enjoying them anyway. That is a side effect we accept no liability for.
Our approach combines rigorous mathematical methodology with the understanding that the person using the tool is a human being with limited patience and excellent taste. We optimize for both correctness and the experience of arriving at correctness.
We maintain the kind of standards that would make a Michelin inspector nervous. Every output is checked, rechecked, and then checked once more by someone who genuinely enjoys finding problems. We have several such people on staff. They are not always popular at parties.
Bistromath Works is staffed by individuals who chose this particular intersection of disciplines not because it was sensible, but because it was interesting. We have found that "interesting" consistently outperforms "sensible" in the long run, though we acknowledge the sample size is limited.
Eddie is our proprietary computational platform. He is, by most accounts, very good at what he does. He is also, by all accounts, aware of this. We have attempted to instill in him a sense of modesty and can confirm that the attempt was made.
What Eddie does, specifically, is process your data with a level of thoroughness that borders on the obsessive, present his findings with an editorial candor that some describe as "refreshing" and others describe as "a lot," and ensure that you never have to wonder whether your numbers are right.
